See that? That was me a few years ago. I looked awesome! I want to be that guy again!

I don’t know if I mentioned this before but I spent 3 months in Africa as part of a volunteer service for VSO. While I was there, I stayed in a lovely house with a wonderful family. The problem was, I had very little internet, the TV was all in Swahili and the electricity was off most days.

So I took to exercising every day to pass the time. I only started about 6 weeks in; so for the last 6 weeks, I was training every day. Obviously, being in a part of the world like… I’ll just show you where it is.

You can’t tell from there, but it was in the middle of nowhere. So there were no gyms, no free weights, no protein shakes. It was just bodyweight exercises, running, walking, playing football with people in the village.

I’ll have to do a blog about my time there. It was a wonderful life experience.

I didn’t have any body image motivations, I wasn’t planning on getting bigger. I was just really, really bored and had a lot of time to kill.

My day consisted of:

7am: Wake up

8 am: Mama shouts it’s time for a shower (they had to boil the water over a fire for hot water)

8 30am: Breakfast which was usually mandazi (kind of like a donut), popcorn, chips my eye (fried chips in an omelet) and a jug of tea

10am: Head down to the Community Centre for the days work which was 2 miles away, downhill

12pm: Lunch, usually rice and beans.

1-5pm: “Work” or wandering around

5-7pm: Card games at the pub

7-9pm: Staying indoors because it’s pitch black and mosquitoes are the work of the devil

9pm: Dinner, rice and beans again. Maybe a fish head stew or curried goat.

11pm: Sleep

As you can see, there were massive gaps with nothing to do. Back home, I fill that time with Xbox, TV, chilling out.

I didn’t have that over there. So I did press ups and squats in my room or Rob and I would go on massive treks for hours.

I got in incredible shape. I was healthier, fitter and stronger than I probably ever have been. And I want that back.

So these next few weeks, I’m going to be exercising more and being healthy.

In terms of my food, it’s not really going to change much. I’m going to have to say goodbye to “Pizza Friday”. Or find a healthy alternative.

I’m going to need to drink a lot more water. I would drink about 4 litres a day in Africa and a lot less alcohol… that just goes without saying.

Regular meals too. I think that played a major part in my health boost. Back here, I eat when I can be bothered. Over in Kamachumu, if you didn’t eat everyone assumed you had Malaria and were probably not long for this Earth. So I need to get back into that.

Sleep. I need more sleep. I get around 3-5 hours sleep a night unless I sleep in (by accident). I need to get back into a regular sleep pattern.

Lots and lots of exercise. The caveat being, I’m not joining a gym. It’s all bodyweight exercises, whatever weights I have in my house and walking/jogging.

I have taken a photograph of myself this morning and… let’s just say it’s quite the motivator.
